University of Gjakova decides to award the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" - Post mortem for former Congressman Thomas Peter ‘Tom’ Lantos

The Senate of the University of Gjakova "Fehmi Agani" in the meeting held on July 17, 2020, decided to award the title "Doctor Honoris Causa" - Post mortem for the former US Congressman Mr. Thomas Peter ‘Tom’ ​​Lantos, with the motivation: "For merit and extraordinary contribution on peace consolidation and the promotion of human values, for the permanent support on the process of freedom and independence of the Republic of Kosovo".

 

The University of Gjakova responded positively to the initiative initiated by the “Friends of America” Association, which was also supported by the central institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, the Kosovo Jewish Organization, the Jewish community in Kosovo, UGJFA student organizations and civil society.

The award ceremony will be organized at the appropriate time and in coordination with relevant institutions.

Tom Lantos was part of the U.S. Congress from 1980 to 2008 and from 2007 he was chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs in the Chamber of Representatives as a Holocaust survivor. He was one of the first American congressmen to visit Kosovo during a difficult period in June 1990. Mr. Lantos greatly influenced in raising the Kosovo issue to the highest decision-making institutions in the United States.

It is an honor and privilege for UGJFA to honor with the highest title the former US Congressman Tom Lantos, who did a lot for the freedom and independence of Kosovo; said in the reasoning of the decision in front of  the Senate, the rector of the University of Gjakova "Fehmi Agani", Prof . Ass. Dr Artan Nimani.
