Online training on sampling, types of analyzes and their importance on population health
On 28.05.2020, within the project: "Sustainable use of groundwater resources and safe drinking water in the Municipality of Gjakova", online training was conducted related to sampling method, types of analyzes and their importance in health of the population.
The training was conducted by Prof. Ass. Dr. Antigona Ukëhaxhaj, Public Health Specialist and Professor Roza Allabashi from Boku University of Vienna as partner in this project.
Participants in this training were UGJFA- staff from the Faculty of Medicine who are part of this project, the students of the Department of Nursing involved in this project, and the staff from KUSA- which is also a supporter and a part of the US Embassy- as supporters of this project, where our University is one of beneficiaries.
During the training, Professor Ukëhaxhaj highlighted the role and importance of drinking water with special emphasis on water from the wells where 16% of rural areas of this municipality use it as the only source for water supply.
Afterwards, she spoke about the types of analyzes that these sources will be tested on as well as the most common sources of their contamination. A low level of awareness also plays a special role in this field especially related to the protection of water resources and their non-maintenance and disinfection.
For the first time through this project there will be analyzed water samples of wells within all required parameters according to the Law on drinking water of the Republic of Kosovo and the European Directive. So, the water from the wells will be tested in physical -chemical, microbiological analyzes, heavy metals, trihalomethanes and pesticides, which will be tested in the accredited laboratories of the Testing Laboratories Center at NIPHK where the Professor is involved.
Then, Professor Roza Allabashi spoke about the types of analytical analysis with special emphasis on the presence of pesticides and trihalomethanes in drinking water and their effect on health.
At the end, the participants from KUSA expressed their gratitude to the Professor for the invitation and encouraged her, that until the end they will support this project that has a vital and special importance for the health of the population in rural areas.
